Once you’re approved for the Automattic Creator Program, you can create tracking links in Impact to promote Automattic products and services. You can link to a brand’s homepage, a specific product or other page, or use a promotional asset provided in Impact.
The best option depends on what you’re promoting.
Create a tracking link when you want to link to a specific page
Use Impact’s Create a Link tool when you already know which page you want to send your audience to. You can link to a homepage or deep link to a specific page, such as a product page, pricing page, or blog post.
For example, if you’re writing about a WooCommerce extension, you can create a tracking link that sends readers directly to that extension’s page on WooCommerce.com.
Deep linking can make it easier for your audience to find the product or information you’re recommending.
Use an asset when you want ready-to-use creative
Assets are promotional materials that Automattic has made available in Impact. Depending on the brand, these can include banners, images, text links, and other creative.
Use an asset when you want to add a visual or other ready-made promotional element to your website or content. Assets already include the relevant tracking information, so you don’t need to create a separate tracking link for the asset.
You can also get the tracking link associated with an asset if you want to use the link without the creative itself.
Which option should I use?
Here’s a quick way to decide:
I want to link directly to a product or page.
Use Create a Link and enter the page URL as your landing page.
I want to use a banner or other promotional image.
Find the appropriate asset in Content > Assets.
I want to use an Automattic promotional asset for a provided landing page, but I don’t need the image or provided text; I only need its link.
Find the asset and copy just its associated tracking link.
I’m writing about a specific product.
Consider creating a deep link directly to that product’s page instead of sending your audience to the brand’s homepage.
Create a tracking link in Impact
Use Impact’s Create A Link widget to create a tracking link for the page you want your audience to visit.
- Log in to your Impact account.
- From your dashboard, find the Create A Link widget.
- Select Automattic, Inc. (WordPress.com, Pressable, WooCommerce, Jetpack) from the program dropdown.
- In the Landing Page field, enter the URL of the page you want your audience to visit.
- Select Create.
- Copy the generated tracking link and use it in your content.
If you need more control over how your links are tracked, Impact also offers advanced tracking options, which can be used to add additional tracking information to your links.
What should I enter in the Landing Page field?
Enter the full URL of the page you want your audience to see after they click your tracking link.
For example:
- https://wordpress.com/ for the WordPress.com homepage
- https://wordpress.com/hosting/ for WordPress.com hosting details
- https://woocommerce.com/products/booking-and-appointment/ for a specific WooCommerce product
- A specific article or other page on an Automattic brand’s website
You can link to any active URL on a participating Automattic brand’s website. Linking to a page other than a homepage is called deep linking.
Before creating a link, make sure the URL belongs to a participating Automattic brand and that it’s the page you actually want your audience to visit.
What happens if I leave the Landing Page field blank?
If you leave the Landing Page field blank, Impact will use the program’s default landing page.
For the Automattic program, it’s generally better to enter the specific page you want to promote. A more relevant destination can make it easier for your audience to find what you’re recommending.
Find and use Automattic assets
If you want to use a banner, image, text link, or other promotional creative provided by Automattic, look for it in Impact’s Assets section.
- From the top navigation bar, select Content > Assets.
- Select Automattic, Inc. (WordPress.com,Pressable,WooCommerce,Jetpack) in the brand list on the left.
- Search for the product or Automattic brand you want to promote.
- Use other available filters to narrow the results.
- Select the asset you want to use.
- Follow the options provided in the asset details to copy the tracking link or the HTML code for the asset.
Impact associates tracking links with assets so that clicks and conversions can be attributed to your account.
Assets can be especially useful when you want to add a visual promotion without creating the creative yourself. Automattic has provided banners for each participating brand in a variety of sizes for you in your Impact account. If you need an asset that isn’t currently available, such as a product screenshot or a different banner size, contact the Automattic Creator Program Team for assistance.
A few things to keep in mind
Make sure you’re linking to the right brand
Automattic has multiple brands and products in the same program. When creating a tracking link, double-check that Automattic, Inc. is selected before creating the link.
Send people to the most relevant page
If you’re recommending a specific product, feature, or service, link directly to the page where your audience can learn more or take action.
Use your tracking link when you promote Automattic products
Don’t copy the regular URL from an Automattic website and use that instead of your tracking link. Your tracking link is what allows Impact to attribute eligible referrals to you.
Keep your links up to date
If you use an asset or link in evergreen content, check it periodically to make sure it still points to the right page and is still available in Impact.
